Because I recently (the summer before senior year) decided I wanted to be a teacher, I figured it was best to get some experience in the classroom before I "officially" made my decision about become one. Let's be honest, I already knew it was what I wanted to do, but it was going to make my advisor feel better if I was certain. To put his mind to ease, I went shadowed a sixth grade science teacher once a week and a high school biomedical science teacher once a week my senior year. I quickly discovered that I enjoyed working more with sixth graders (sorry, high schoolers!) because of their excitement and curiosity at this age. Oh, and yes, I also confirmed that I wanted to teach. I had a wonderful time helping out in the classroom, whether by answering questions, making sure students were paying attention, or even by bringing in animals to get students interested in science! I loved it! Below are just a few snippets I remembered to document of my time shadowing some awesome teachers.
