The summer before my sophomore year of college, I interned with Lake of the Ozarks State Park for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. I worked at a branch of the park called Ozark Caverns. During my time at the state park, I gave interpretive lantern-lit tours to groups of all ages and children’s tours. I also hosted evening programs and children’s programs at the campground in the park on topics varying from owls, snakes, bears, to even camouflage. I provided guidance and insight about the park and its resources at the visitor center and eventually guided interpretive kayak tours on Lake of the Ozarks.
This was my first experience in the field of interpretation, and I fell in love with it. Interpretation will always be a part of my life. I hope to continue and broaden my interpretive skills with each new position I hold.
