As I noted in 'Year Four: Final Act' under the 'In the Classroom' section, I performed research my senior year in regards to optimal foraging behavior of Sciurus carolinensis, eastern gray squirrels. Well, it turns out that I didn't get all of the squirreling around out of my system the first time around! During the second semester of my senior year, I once again decided to perform some nutty research on squirrels. This time, I decided to see if squirrels preferred macadamia nuts or walnuts given each option. This would allow me to determine if squirrels picked a nut with higher fat and calorie content (macadamia nuts), nuts that appeared larger (walnuts), or could not distinguish between the two. If you're one of those nuts that want to know the answer, you’ll have to wait to find out as this research will be continued by another undergraduate student next year!
However, to hold you over for now, I’ve included some pictures I took throughout the process of my experiment! I hope you enjoy! |
